How Much Flooring Waste Should I Buy?

10% vs 15% waste for laminate, tile, and carpet — when to add more for diagonal layouts, stairs, and pattern matching.

What waste covers

Waste is extra material beyond your measured room area. It pays for cutoffs at walls, mistakes, broken tile, and future repairs — not for unmeasured closets you forgot.

Starting percentages

Our calculator defaults to 10% laminate and 15% tile. Increase the slider if your layout is complex.

  • Laminate / LVP straight lay: 10% typical
  • Laminate diagonal or many doorways: 12–15%
  • Ceramic/porcelain tile: 15% standard; 18–20% for herringbone or large format
  • Carpet: 10% for plain carpet; 15%+ for patterned or berber
  • Stairs and landings: measure separately and add 15% — lots of cuts

When extra waste saves a second trip

  • Open floor plan with continuous run through multiple doorways
  • Large format tile (fewer pieces per box — one break hurts)
  • Discontinued color you cannot reorder
  • First-time DIY installer

Frequently asked questions

Is leftover flooring wasted money?

Some leftover is intentional. One spare box prevents a mismatch if you need a repair in five years. Store it labeled with the room name.

Should I round up boxes?

Always round up to whole boxes at the store. Partial boxes are not sold — our calculator rounds up automatically.
