Why pad matters

Pad cushions foot traffic, extends carpet life, and improves insulation. Carpet without pad wears fast and feels thin. Order pad in the same square yards as carpet (with the same waste allowance).

Pad types

  • Rebond (recycled foam): most common residential — 6–8 lb density for living areas
  • Memory foam / frothed foam: premium feel — match carpet manufacturer max thickness
  • Rubber: dense, durable — good on stairs and high traffic
  • Moisture barrier pad: basements or slab-on-grade — not a substitute for fixing leaks

Thickness rules

Too thick pad on stairs or with some carpets causes wrinkling. Many carpets specify max 7/16 inch pad. Check carpet warranty before buying thick plush pad.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse old carpet pad?

No for a quality install. Old pad is compressed and contaminated. New carpet on old pad wrinkles and fails warranty.
